“Give with faith; but not without it. Give with pleasure;
give with modesty; give as if it is one’s duty; give with heart.”
(Taittirīyopaniṣad 1.11.3)
We at BAPS Swaminarayan Research understand the crucial role that service plays in the lives of our members and the communities in which they operate. Service is the heart of education. It provides students, educators, and researchers the opportunity to become active members of the community, change lives, and create a lasting, positive impact on society. After all, what is the meaning of education if it does not enlighten, inspire change, and make the world a better place? For this reason, we encourage our students, faculty, and researchers to become productive, thoughtful citizens and inspiring leaders in their communities and professions. We provide a platform for our members to engage in service and social change opportunities that complement our rigorous academic experience. Serving Others Service is about others—putting others’ needs, benefits, and progress before our own. By helping others, service seeks to enhance the lives of individuals, and by doing so, improve families, the community, and ultimately the world we live in. At BAPS Swaminarayan Research our direction of service focuses on providing knowledge-based tools and opportunities to members of the community. Through various community-oriented activities and programs we seek to: Inform and provide new opportunities of learning and education
Create awareness of ongoing research and developments
Provide opportunities for skill-acquisition and language training
Inspire and facilitate creative expression
Foster appreciation and awareness for Indian thought, culture, and tradition
Counsel on career opportunities
Connect members of the community with not only each other but also those from other communities and backgrounds
Bridge together research activities and academic units with community members, allowing for more comprehensive, inclusive, and productive learning and research
By physically helping individuals in the community, inspiring them to live morally responsible lives, being with them emotionally, and engaging in collective community service activities, closer, more meaningful ties are built between our members and the communities in which they live. In addition to learning and research-oriented service activities, we also believe it is our duty as responsible members of the community and contribute in many of the other aspects of social improvement. We believe that such a holistic approach to service instigates a lasting, positive impact on the individuals we help, the societies in which we live, and the world, which we share. Helping Oneself
by Helping Others
By helping others, those who serve also help themselves. Pramukh Swami Maharaj would often reveal: “In the joy of others lies our own.
In the progress of others rests our own.
In the good of others abides our own.
Know this to be the key to peace and happiness.”
Participating in community assistance increases social awareness and responsibility and strengthens ties to the community. By developing civic and social responsibility, students and researchers become conscious of themselves as leading members of the community, become aware and sensitive to community needs, and understand the lasting impact that their actions have on others.
Engaging in service helps build upon existing skills and learn how to redirect or implement them for the benefit of the larger community. By working together with others, volunteers are granted the opportunity to practice and develop important skills used in the workplace, such as teamwork, communication, problem solving, project planning, task management, and organization. Collaborative service also broadens support networks, allowing people with common interests and various resources and skills to come together, exchange experience and skill sets, and form mutually supporting relationships. Partaking in community service also affects a student or researcher’s career prospects.
Community service is an excellent way to meet new people and make new friends. By bringing people together, volunteering provides an excellent opportunity to practice and develop social skills. Such admiration, compassion, and understanding not only serve as sources of inspiration, but also compel volunteers to create awareness, incite change, and make a difference. It also teaches people of all ages and backgrounds to treat one another with respect, become sensitive to others’ needs, and be understanding of the circumstances surrounding others. Service in Diverse Forms Recognizing the importance of service, our institutes and their members engage in many activities that contribute to the communities in which they exist. These activities include offering opportunities to engage in continued education programs, courses, and seminars that provide access to learning in a wide range of disciplinary fields. We also encourage members from our communities to attend special educational assemblies, presentations, guest lectures, and exhibitions. Participation in these events allow for members of the community to learn and become aware of new developments in learning and voice their interests and thoughts on pertinent topics. Our institute members also provide tutoring services in a number of disciplines, allowing for those with limited access to quality formal education to receive expert guidance and instruction. Return to About By regularly visiting underprivileged homes, our members provide council by creating awareness of available educational services and sustainable financial, career, and self-improvement opportunities. Our students, faculty, and researchers also actively engage in community upliftment programs. They also help alleviate domestic and community issues by engaging in programs that inspire moral consciousness, engage in family co-counseling, and address addiction affected households. During crisis situations, our members also play an active role in providing critical relief and aid to affected communities and homes. As leaders of the community, our members not only understand the significance of changing the world through learning and research but also accept their responsibility to actively serve others in any way possible.
